HRM Assignment 1
The purpose of this assignment is to: test the learners knowledge and application of the evolution of the function of human resources management, the role it plays in the long term success of an organisation, the role line management plays in the successful implementation of HR policies and procedures and an awareness of employment legislation.
You have recently graduated with your Degree in Human Resources Management and have taken up a position as Personnel Manager with Fabian Gaudi. Fabian Gaudi is an Irish based company involved in the design, manufacture and distribution of ladies fashions to over 7 00 retail outlets throughout Europe. You will be located at its head office in Dublin which employees over 300 staff involved in the design, manufacture and distribution of its product range.
Fabian Gaudi commenced operations over 40 (1972) years ago when its owner, and still the owner, completed a fashion design course at Trinity College. Unable to find a job she started making wedding dresses for friends and over time her reputation for top quality designs grew. With this growth in her reputation so did the growth in new business. Within t he first five years of business she employed 15 staff including machinists, cutters ( people who cut the pattern from the material) and a part time accountant. After 20 years the business had grown to employ 150 staff and involved a product range that included wedding dresses, coats, scarfs, ha ndbags, suits, shirts etc. The ow ner still had total control of the day to day operations and was actively involved in all decision making.
Over the past number of years there has been a number of staff issues mainly due to the current global economic problems which has led to issues within the personnel department.
You have been working for Fabian Gaudi for one month and have conducted a full internal analysis of the personal function. You have requested a meeting with the owner to propose a change in philosophy when dealing with staff. The current approach is along traditional personnel management lines and you want to change the emphasis to that of Human Resources Management.

You are required to: Prepare a report that you will present to the owner distinguishing between personal management and human resources management and you must include an assessment of the function of human resources management and how it contributes to the long term success of the organisation.
Task 2: (A.C 1.3)
In your report you must also include an analysis and evaluation of the responsibilities of the line management function in relation to their role in the effectiveness of the human resources function.
